COLORFUL homes & buildings surrounded by a historic & rich history, Bergen is a true explorers city…

Bergen is surrounded by fishing docks, ports, delicious bakeries with delectable treats, and fun shops. Exploring this historic city is if you landed in a storybook. This fjord city is thought to have been settled before the Viking age around 1020 AD. Observing the architecture & design here is a unique and interesting experience. The various styles and structure of houses and buildings are beyond stunning. The gables, arches, bolds & pastels, woods, and stone are seemingly endless. This Scandinavian city is rich in history and diverse culture.

One of my favorite things about Bergen was the lovely neighborhood walk on my way up Fløyen Mountain. You can take the Fløibanen (cable car) or walk up, and take the car back down. I suggest doing the walk, and then taking the cable car down, so that you can see the neighborhood. If you are seeking panoramic views, then this is a must! I loved being able to take in every little detail of the buildings and homes.

Oh, and let’s not forget about the shopping! Norwegian decor is of clean lines, white linens, and even some monochromatic palettes, but that is quite all right considering the colorful exteriors that line the streets and hills are just stunning. Do not skip out on the clothing shops. In Bergen, specifically you will find many Norwegian brands that you will be hard pressed to find elsewhere. One of my favorite stores was fresh pepper — an eclectic collection of great designer pieces. The Norli book store had a lot of wonderful Norwegian design magazines and books — A must if you love design and architecture.

While in Bergen I left on the most breathtaking fjord cruise. It was very windy, which then made for very rough waters that day, but I would do it all over again if given the chance. I cannot stress enough how you should not miss this! If you are staying in Bergen and without a car to explore with — this is a wonderful, alternative way to witness all of the outstanding beauty that surrounds Bergen.

THE WEATHER / WHEN TO VISIT
It rains. It rains a lot. Bergen is the one of the rainiest cities in the world. Typically - the best time of the year to visit is late spring/early summer, however, it is absolutely gorgeous in Bergen in autumn, but it rains almost every day. Prepare and pack accordingly. For about a month in around the beginning of summer (summer solstice) you will experience the most daylight hours. Around 20 hours to be exact. In the winter (December & January) you will have the least amount of daylight. About 5 hours.
